Invitation for Funding Requests
Brant Waterways Foundation invites funding requests from registered charitable and incorporated non-profit organizations, the City of Brantford, County of Brant, Six Nations of the Grand River and the Grand River Conservation Authority – for projects that will further the vision and mission of Brant Waterways Foundation. Funding requests need to meet the Charitable Purposes of Brant Waterways Foundation and the Eligibility Requirements and Guidelines as outlined below.
Generally, only applications involving projects on publicly owned lands or Six Nations of the Grand River lands shall be eligible. Exceptions will be considered on a a case-by-case basis and must include significant environmental benefit and long term obligations from the land owner.
Brant Waterways Foundation Vision and Mission:
Since its establishment in 1988, Brant Waterways Foundation has – together with its funding partners – invested more than $5 million in our local communities.
We envision a community in which everyone benefits from a connection to our healthy waterways and trails, and works collaboratively to protect and preserve our natural resources.
Brant Waterways Foundation seeks to provide leadership, funding assistance and advocacy to projects in Brantford, Brant County, and Six Nations of the Grand River, that enhance, restore, protect and preserve our natural heritage of the Grand River, its waterways and adjacent lands to provide recreational opportunities, a healthy environment and sustainable use.
Granting Categories
Small grants program
Brant Waterways Foundation will provide up to $5,000 per project (maximum) for projects that meet our eligibility requirements. Grants are limited to one application per year, per organization.
Large grants program
From time to time Brant Waterways Foundation will undertake to participate in larger projects requiring major grants which exceed the $5,000 threshold of the Small Grants Program. For examples of large projects, click on these links: Hardy Rd. Project and TH&B Project.
Application Deadlines and Timelines for Approvals:
- There are 2 grant application submission deadlines – January 15th and July 15th of each year.
- All applicants shall be notified with respect to funding no later than February 28th (for the January 15th grant deadline), and no later than August 31st (for the July 15th grant deadline). NOTE: We are making exceptions for the first 6 months of 2025 since the January deadline has passed.
Eligibility requirements and guidelines:
- Eligible projects must meet one or more of Brant Waterways Foundation’s “Charitable Purposes” and take place within our geographic jurisdiction: Brantford,County of Brant, or Six Nations of the Grand River. BWF’s Charitable Purposes are defined as: i) to preserve, protect, restore and improve the natural resources of the Grand River, its tributaries, related bodies of water, and adjacent lands ii) to encourage and foster understanding and awareness of the natural and heritage values of the water resources iii) to promote and assist projects which provide public amenities related to such water resources and thereby enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve iv) to assist in the provision of health and recreational programs and facilities related to waterways
- Could provide benefits to the general public and should provide benefit to the natural environment.
- For the Large Grants Program, Municipalities of Brant, Brantford, Six Nations of the Grand River, and the GRCA are eligible to make applications for funding assistance. Funding requests from organizations aside from the previously defined groups may apply for consideration on an individual basis.
- Generally, only applications involving projects on publicly owned lands or Six Nations of the Grand River lands shall be eligible. Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis and must include significant environmental benefit and long term obligations from the land owner.
- Applications must be submitted on the Foundation’s fillable Grant Application Form and contain all required information.
- The Foundation shall not be responsible for the future expenses of a funded project. The applicant’s provision for such future expenses shall be considered in the selection process.
- For the Large Grants Program, the application must include a written commitment that the project development, construction, maintenance, renovation costs, or related purchases will be in accordance with the applicant’s tendering/quotation policies.
- Successful applications must review and commit to all terms outline in the Brant Waterways Foundation Funding Agreement, such as the submission of a final report.
- Funded projects shall bear appropriate recognition of the Brant Waterways Foundation’s support.
- Please note: Not all grant applications submitted will necessarily be approved for funding. All final decisions with respect to the fundraising and allocation of donated funds rest with the Directors of the Foundation. All discussions surround grant applications are deemed to be confidential and non-disputable.
- The Directors of the Foundation reserve the sole right of interpretation of these guidelines.
